US Deputy Secretary of State for Arms Control and International Security, Bonnie Jenkins, announced that Washington will consider the possibility of using nuclear weapons only in extreme cases and to protect vital interests.

“The United States will consider the possibility of using nuclear weapons in extreme circumstances to protect only the vital interests of the United States or our allies and partners,” Jenkins said at the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty Review Conference.

“The United States will not use or threaten to use nuclear weapons against non-nuclear countries that are members of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty,” she added.
